JESÚS GURIDI (1886 - 1961)

Born in 1886 in Vitoria-Gasteiz, he did his first musical studies in Madrid. When his family moved to Bilbao, he studied with Sainz Basabe, the director of Bilbao Conservatory. He then went to study in Paris with Vincent d'Indy in his Schola Cantorum and, later, in Brussels with Joseph Jongen and in Cologne with Otto Neitzel. From 1912 he was the director of the Sociedad Coral of Bilbao where he went on to composed some of his best works. A classicist, his range is wide: several operas including Mirentxu and Amaya, zarzuelas (El Caserío), a symphony and a piano concert (Homenaje a Walt Disney), religious music, organd and piano music, two string quartest, and a large number of choral works. In 1939 he became Organ Professor at the Madrid Conservatory and in 1956 its director. He died in 1961.
