FELIPE GORRITI (1839 - 1896)
Born in Uharte-Arakil (Navarre) in 1839, he did his first musical studies with his father. At the age of 10 he moved to Pamplona to study with mariano gracía, the Chapel Master at Pamplona Cathedral. In 1855 he moved to madrid to study with Román Jimeno and Hilarión Eslava. At the age of 20 he won by public contest the place of organist of Santa María, in Tafalla wher he stayed for 8 years. In 1867 he became organist and chapel master of Santa María of Tolosa where he stayed til his death in 1896.
Without any doubt he is the most important Basque composer of the XIXth Century. At the height of his powers he was also well known and celebrated in France where some of his compositions went on to win important prizes. He brought post-romanticism into Vasconia.
He was also a noted pedagogue and it can be said that at least a generation of Basque liturgical composers passed through his hands, founding a school of organ composers and players, the most famed of which were Eduardo Mokoroa and his son, Ignacio Mokoroa.
Gorriti was also very closely related to the introduction of several great French organ makers into Vasconia, notably, Aristide Cavaillé-Coll and Stolz Frères.
His works include a dozen masses, several with orchestra, Five Misereres, Hymns and motets and organ works. Comparatively his profane output is scarced: some piano works and a major choral work for male voices (Ecos de Andía).
